Essential Personal Protective Equipment for CAL FIRE Wildland Firefighters Safety and Performance

SHARE NOW

Wildland firefighting means working in extreme heat, smoke, and rugged terrain.

The right personal protective equipment (PPE) is essential to keeping firefighters safe on the line.

CAL FIRE wildland firefighters are issued specialized gear built for vegetation fires:
➡ THERMAL PROTECTION: Flame-resistant (FR) clothing, typically Nomex, helps protect against intense radiant heat and reduces the risk of serious burn injury during sudden flare-ups.
➡ LAST-RESORT PROTECTION: Every firefighter carries a fire shelter, designed to reflect radiant heat and provide critical protection if escape routes are compromised.
➡ PHYSICAL HAZARD DEFENSE: Hard hats, leather gloves, eye protection, and heavy-duty leather boots guard against falling limbs, rolling rocks, sharp tools, and rough terrain.
➡ HEAT STRESS MANAGEMENT: Unlike structural gear, wildland PPE is lightweight and breathable, balancing flame resistance with ventilation to help reduce heat-related illness during long, strenuous shifts.

This PPE can weigh up to 30-50+ pounds altogether. PPE is one part of a larger safety system that includes training, communication, and adherence to wildland firefighting safety standards.

Let’s hear it for all the firefighters who wear wildland gear. Share your stories or congratulations in the comments.
