Communities in California have a new opportunity to enhance their wildfire preparedness with the launch of the Wildfire Prevention Grants Program, which offers up to $135 million in funding. Applications are open until August 6, 2025.

The grants are aimed at local initiatives designed to protect people, structures, and communities from wildfires. Key focus areas include hazardous fuels reduction, wildfire prevention planning, and education efforts.

Governor Gavin Newsom highlighted the state’s commitment to funding projects that have a proven track record of keeping communities safe. Successful past projects, particularly in Los Angeles County and Sonoma County, have included vegetation management and the establishment of fuel breaks, which have been instrumental in protecting homes and facilitating safe evacuations.

Chief Daniel Berlant, California State Fire Marshal, noted that over the last five years, more than $500 million has been awarded to over 490 projects across California, enhancing wildfire resilience through strategic planning and preventive measures.

A virtual workshop on the grant process is scheduled for July 1, 2025. Eligible applicants include state agencies, Native American tribes, and various local and non-profit organizations. Grants will prioritize projects that mitigate wildfire risks to habitable structures, especially those benefiting disadvantaged or vulnerable populations, as well as those that offer carbon reduction benefits.
