California Advances Infrastructure with $1.1 Billion Investment in Zero-Emission Transit and Safety Projects
Governor Gavin Newsom announced today that the California Transportation Commission has approved $1.1 billion to enhance the state’s transportation infrastructure. This funding supports new zero-emission buses, charging stations, bridge restoration, highway safety improvements, and increased mobility on local streets, aligning with the governor’s Build More, Faster – For All agenda.
Key investments include:
- $53 million for 12 clean energy locomotives to modernize Southern California’s Metrolink system.
- $57 million to repair storm-damaged sections of Highway 1 near Lucia.
- $9.5 million for a clean-energy bus mobility center in Santa Maria.
- $15 million to replace the historic Seventh Street Bridge in Modesto.
- $13 million to restore State Route 38 in San Bernardino County after the El Dorado Fire.
- $839,000 for bike lanes and sidewalk improvements in Fresno County.
District 2 projects focus on critical slide repairs, pavement rehabilitation, and bridge joint and deck replacements in Trinity, Siskiyou, and Shasta counties.
This funding includes $463 million from Senate Bill 1 (the Road Repair and Accountability Act of 2017) and $190 million from the 2021 federal Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. California is expected to receive nearly $42 billion in federal infrastructure funding over five years to upgrade roads, bridges, rail, public transit, airports, ports, and EV charging networks.
California continues to lead in climate action by expanding access to electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure, with over 200,000 public EV charging stations statewide complementing the 800,000 home chargers. Greenhouse gas emissions have declined 21% since 2000 while the state economy grew 81%. In 2023, California achieved powering two-thirds of its electricity from clean energy, setting a national record.
Transportation Secretary Toks Omishakin emphasized the state’s commitment to a modern, sustainable transportation system, while Caltrans Director Dina El-Tawansy highlighted ongoing efforts to enhance mobility and respond to climate impacts.
