Road repairs and other maintenance at Sand Mountain Recreation Area, which is 28 miles east of Fallon will start on March 17.

The main road will be repaved, a helipad will be installed, and low water crossings will be repaired.

The Bureau of Land Management Carson City District Office (BLM) says in the event of an emergency, the helipad will assist in reducing the time it takes for accident victims to get to hospitals.

They say the major entrance road will be temporarily closed while the pavement is done, starting in May 2025.

A temporary access road will be made available from the main entrance during that time.

BLM says between 50,000 and 70,000 people visit Sand Mountain annually on average, using motorbikes, dune buggies, sand rails, all-terrain vehicles, and side-by-sides.

They say that Sand Mountain is one of the most well-liked off-highway vehicle recreation locations in Nevada and Northern California, and that the maintenance work will be completed by a contractor to satisfy the requirements of public safety.
