This week at Pyramid Lake, we experimented with a variety of baits and techniques. Andrew Navarro’s Maribou jigs stood out, catching the most fish for our group. In addition, Cast Baits, particularly the Cast Prodigy swimbait, were highly effective for me, especially during early mornings and evenings.
I landed my largest cutthroat trout using a custom-tied midge on an 8lb leader. Although I don’t fly fish traditionally, I use a fly under a weighted bobber, similar to what fly anglers call an indicator. For those using spinning rods, incorporating flies like midges, balanced leeches, and wooly buggers can be highly beneficial. When fishing with a midge, I prefer a 9’6″ rod, which facilitates casting a long leader in deeper waters.
Here’s a practical tip: opt for a round weighted bobber, as oddly shaped ones tend to tangle easily.
