Lake Almanor Fish Pens Stocked with Thousands of Trout for Spring Release

The Almanor Fishing Association announces that the Lake Almanor fish pens are now stocked with 50,000 West Virginia rainbows trout from Darrah Springs Hatchery, delivered by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, and approximately 5,000 brown trout from Feather River College. Organizers offer a big thank-you to the volunteers who helped transfer the fish.

Pens protect young fish while volunteers care for them over the winter before release into Lake Almanor in the spring.

Since 1985, AFA has managed the longest running and most successful fish cage program in California, said organizers. In late fall, fish are delivered to the pens. Volunteers feed and care for the fish daily throughout the winter, and the fish are released in spring. AFA has raised and released over 2 million fish into Lake Almanor.

More information is available on the AFA website, where there is also an opportunity to support the fish pen program.
