Wolf Attacks on Cattle Surge in Sierra Valley Raising Concerns for Ranchers

SHARE NOW

There have been 64 confirmed or probable wolf kills/attacks on cattle here in Sierra Valley since March 7. The vast majority of these kills were found after ranchers had been notified the next morning that collared wolves had formed a “cluster” in these areas on their ranches. Considering there are only 3 collared wolves in this area and guesstimates of 12-20 wolves total in the valley, it is likely that there are many calves that are killed and never found. Regardless, these are the hard facts and all of the depredations that you see on the map were confirmed as wolves by either the state trapper or a biologist. 64 cattle lost is an unprecedented number for such a small area, and yet it only tells a portion of the story. Cattle are stressed and anxious, baby calves are killed and consumed to a point that there is not enough evidence to confirm whether it as a wolf kill or their remains are never even found when killed by a non-collared wolf, and ranchers are tired, frustrated and drained over the emotional and financial toll that this is taking on us. As you can see on the map, there are multiple small towns all over this valley and a fairly large number of the kills are VERY close to these communities. These wolves don’t fear people and there are no consequences for their actions, so why should they have any fear? The CDFW does not want this information to be shared by the public. If you look at their website and find the list of 2025 depredation investigations (which is not easy to find to begin with), the most recent that they have listed is from June 7. THAT IS 7 WEEKS AGO!! The largest portion of the 64 depredations has occurred since July 4th. Every morning we hear of another kill and last night it was 2 calves. This map shows the grim reality of what is going on in this beautiful valley, and the truth needs to continue to be shared.
