The Western Pacific Railroad Museum is set to kick off its 2024 season on Thursday, May 2, 2024, welcoming visitors to explore its exhibits and enjoy the historical ambiance. The museum, located near historic Old Town Portola in scenic Plumas County, will be open to the public from 12 noon to 4 PM on Thursdays and Fridays, and from 10 AM to 5 PM on Saturdays and Sundays.

To mark the beginning of the new season, the museum will offer special motorcar rides on Sunday, May 5, from 11 AM to 4 PM. Motorcars, also known as “speeder cars” or “Putt-Putts,” are small, self-propelled work vehicles that were once ubiquitous on America’s railroads. These cars, which have largely been replaced by modern trucks and SUVs equipped with retractable “hi-rail” wheels for railroad use, were instrumental in facilitating inspections and maintenance along railway lines.

Visitors will have the rare opportunity to ride these historic motorcars and gain insight into a bygone era of railroading. Admission to the museum on Sunday, May 5, will include complimentary motorcar rides, allowing guests to immerse themselves in the nostalgia of rail travel.

The museum admission fees are as follows:
– Adults (ages 19–64): $10.00
– Youth (ages 5–18): $5.00
– Seniors (65 & up) and Active Military: $8.00
– Children (4 and under): Free
– Family Pass: $25.00 (includes entry for 2 Adults and related children 18 and under)

In addition to the motorcar rides, visitors can also look forward to caboose train rides, which will operate on Saturdays and Sundays starting Memorial Day Weekend.
