With wildfire season approaching, volunteers in Portola are teaming up to help neighbors reduce fire danger before summer heats up.

The Portola Firewise Community is hosting a yard waste cleanup event on Saturday, June 6th from 8 a.m. to noon. Volunteers will help residents gather and haul green waste to the IMD green waste facility in Delleker.

The effort is supported by the Northern Sierra Air Quality Management District and the Plumas County Fire Safe Council, which is providing tools and equipment for the event.

Organizers say the goal is to reduce pine needles, branches, and other flammable debris around homes while helping the community maintain its Firewise certification status.

Volunteers will meet at the Portola City Park near the pool parking lot beginning at 7:30 that morning. Donuts and lunch will be provided, including sandwiches, salads, and drinks.

Residents within Portola city limits can also sign up to have green waste hauled away at no cost. Organizers ask that branches be separated from pine needles and cones ahead of pickup.
