Over the course of two days, thunderstorms swept through the Modoc National Forest on Monday and Tuesday, resulting in two lightning-caused fires in the Devils Garden Ranger District. The larger of the two is known as the Reservoir Fire, which has burned approximately 19 acres and is reported as contained. The smaller fire, called the Dorris Fire, has affected around 8 acres.
Both fires were reported on Tuesday afternoon. Forward progression has been stopped, and fire personnel on scene are actively working to build containment lines.
Additional fires may be discovered over the next few days, and we will provide updates as they become available.
A Red Flag Warning is in effect for possible lightning on Wednesday afternoon into the evening. Please help limit the workload of firefighters by preventing human-caused wildfires. Simple actions, such as ensuring that your campfire is completely extinguished before leaving, securing trailer safety chains on boats or RVs, and avoiding parking on dry grass, can make a significant difference. As the 4th of July approaches, remember that all types of fireworks are prohibited on federal lands.
