The Susanville Police Department confirms that an accidental shot was fired early Sunday morning, around one a.m., following a scuffle at Diamond Mountain Casino.
The incident occurred following an evening in which the casino/hotel hosted a PureCombat High Desert Brawl Event.
Authorities say the Susanville Police Department had received a call regarding a fight in the parking lot, with one of the individuals reportedly armed with a firearm.
With the assistance of the Lassen County Sheriff’s Office and California Highway Patrol, officers arrived quickly and discovered that a gunshot had been fired during the altercation, but fortunately, there were no reported injuries.
The armed individual had fled the scene with a group of people.
Witnesses provided a vehicle and suspect description, and within a few hours, officers received information about the possible whereabouts of the armed suspect.
They responded to the 900 block of Main Street and found several people involved in the earlier scuffle. One of them was identified as 20-year-old Sacramento resident Victor Velasquez Jr.
Officers found two handguns near Velasquez when he was approached and arrested on multiple charges, including Battery with serious bodily injury, felon in possession of a firearm, willful discharge of a firearm, carrying a loaded, unregistered handgun, carrying a loaded handgun with a prior felony conviction, and possessing a firearm without an identification mark.
The Lassen District Attorney has stated that Velasquez posted bail yesterday before he could be brought to court for arraignment. He is expected to return to court for arraignment on these charges on October 18.
