Susanville’s Salvation Army reports a pressing need in Lassen County. During the first half of this year, the nonprofit has provided assistance to over 250 individuals, with $35,000 allocated towards rental aid, utilities, and gas vouchers. Coordinator Carla McDonald highlights the success of the organization’s 2nd annual Kilt Classic Golf tournament, held in memory of the late “Mr. Susanville,” Gary Felt. The event raised funds to support children in acquiring clothes for the upcoming school year, as the number of children requiring assistance reached a new high.

The Salvation Army extends its support beyond school clothes by hosting a “Stuff the Bus Drive” for packing backpacks with supplies for local children. McDonald explains that the initial aim was to assist 100 kids, yet the community’s generosity in Lassen County surpassed expectations. The community raised enough funds to ensure that all 150 backpacks were filled for the school children.

However, the need persists. McDonald emphasizes that they are now seeking the community’s help for a day of volunteering. On September 16th, the Susanville Salvation Army will accompany 150 children to stores, allowing them to select their required school supplies. They are in need of volunteer shoppers for this event.
