Susanville Water Division Addresses Cloudy Water Following Recent Earthquakes

The City of Susanville Water Division is aware that some customer: have noticed cloucy or discolored water following the recent earthquakes affecting our region.
The recent earthquakes on December 28″ and 30″, appear to have stirred u sediment in one of the City’s spring sources and some areas of the water distribution system may have als o experienced temporary cisturbance of sediment insice water mains. This can cause turbidity, which appears as cioucy or slightly discolored water.
Turbidity levels are temporarily above the State’s Secondary (aesthetic) standarc, which affects appearance only and is hot health-based. Water quality continues to meet al primary healtn standarcs, and a boil water notice is not requirec
What ls turbidity? ls it harmful?
Turbidity is a measure of cloud iness caused by naturally occurring minerals and sediment
Turbidity itself dloes not pose a health risk
Elevated turbidity can soretimes interfere with disin fection; however, disinfection systems are operating properly, and water quality standards are being met.
What should customers do?
If you notice cloudy or ciscolored water, you may run cold water for several minutes until it clears
I desired, you may use a home fllter certified for particulate reduction for aesthetic purposes
Continue lo report water quality concerns to the water system se staff can track and respand to localized issues
What is the water system doing:
The City of Susanville Water Division has taken the following actions:
Increased water quality monitoring throughout the distribution system
Flushed affected water mains where neeced
. Verified proper operation of the disinfection facilties
