At the Susanville City Council’s last meeting, Mayor Mendy Schuster asked City Manager Dan Newton for information regarding the gas line rupture that led to an evacuation of part of Susanville.

Newton explained a contractor installing a fiber optic cable was exploring a location prior to doing some directional drilling. Newton said the contractor had done its part. It had contacted the appropriate authorities and city staff had marked the location of the city’s gas line.
“Unfortunately, the marks were not in the correct location,” Newton said. “The pipeline was heading up North Street and it took a 45-degree jog toward the gutter line and then started back up North Street … We had maps of the system, and the maps showed the pipeline going straight.”
Newton said normally the city’s maps are spot on, but it this instance, they were not. He said there also was some interference with a device designed to help locate the pipelines, and he said the city was working to resolve all the issues associated with the rupture.
“Fortunately, nobody was hurt, and no property was damaged,” Newton said.
He also thanked the community agencies that responded to offer assistance during the incident.
