The city council has approved Fire Chief Moore at the Susanville Fire department to hire three seasonal fire crew members.
The new additions will assist the department through the summer months and peak fire season. Chief Moore says the additional labor force would be very valuable to the department and the city in helping cut weeds and clear abatement properties. The seasonal hands could also help around the firehouse to complete equipment testing and required hydrant flows.
Moore anticipates the crew to come straight from the college feeder program and seniors graduating high school. The hires will cost 30,000 dollars, already built into the fire department’s budget, yet Chief Moore says the program would bring a 100% return if the engine went on loan to out-of-area fires. Within seven days, the amount going into the program would be made back up for the engine loan. The additional crews could be extended up to 6 months if the fire season calls for extra help or if there are other needs.
The council unanimously approved.
