More opposition letters hit the desks of the Plumas supervisors fighting against the location of the state-mandated new Quincy Courthouse, currently proposed for Dame Shirley Plaza. Yet, the state’s Judicial Council is setting an ultimatum.
Administrative Officer Debra Lucero advised the Supervisors a decision must be made as a letter was received by the Judicial Council that will be addressed in next month’s board meeting.
As clarified by Supervisor McGowan, the decision will not lie in the hands of the board, but they do have the power to present a letter not in support of the proposed placement. McGowan, thus far is the sole supervisor to voice his opinion not in favor of constructing the new courthouse in the historical location.
Other voices of opposition cite that the modern building would distract from the quaint historical look of downtown Quincy, while others wish not to be inundated with more traffic and noise. Some business owners near the plaza say their guest experiences will be diminished, and the new Courthouse will negatively affect their livelihoods.
CAO Lucero said the Judicial Council’s letter will be itemized for the board’s August 1st meeting.
