The 2025 Feather River College horse sale on May 17 attracted a large crowd of buyers and horse enthusiasts, showcasing 19 horses up for auction. Held in the training barn, the event was lively, with the sounds of rain on the roof overshadowed by the cheers from the audience as each horse demonstrated its abilities.
This two-day event featured various activities, including classes, a meet and greet for buyers and sellers, and competitions to highlight the horses’ skills and training. This year’s offerings included the Short-go Reining and Trail Challenge competitions, along with the Top Hand award, which recognizes the top horse and rider combination.
Auctioneer Eric Duarte, returning for his 27th year, was joined by Nick Dowers, a Feather River College alumnus celebrated for his achievements in reined cow horse competitions and horse training. The auction allowed for internet bidding, increasing the competitive atmosphere.
The bidding was intense, with horses selling for prices ranging from $9,000 to $30,000, with proceeds benefiting the FRC Equine Program, now in its 38th year. Current instructors include Susannah Campbell, Claire Guynes, Carolyn Shipp, Crystal Anderson, Gene Armstrong, and Anna Bowles.
After the auction, students and horses congregated outside the barn for a meet-and-greet with the new owners, allowing the audience to interact with the horses and their handlers.
Anna Roth, this year’s Top Hand winner from the FRC Equine Program, shared her future plans. After four years in the program, she expressed gratitude for her training under Susannah Campbell. Roth is set to head to Germany for training before returning to work with reining trainer Max Morin in Texas, where she hopes to secure a permanent position. The connections made during the program are crucial for students entering the industry.
One notable buyer, Craig Myers, acquired the Trail Challenge winner “FRC Miss Ellie O Lena,” trained by Tia Hendrikson. Myers praised Hendrikson’s efforts, noting that he initially came to view another horse but was captivated by Ellie’s performance in the reining pattern.
