The Sierra Central snow lab in Soda Springs says peak snowpack may be behind us. Recent warming temperatures have begun to melt the historic snowpack.

The Department of water resources adds that this year’s snowpack at the lab has more water than at any other point since 1965 at just under 80 inches. The National Weather Service March CLimate report indicates that The enormous snowpack will provide well above normal April-July water supply conditions through the region. Officials warn of the dangers of extreme cold and fast spring waterways and urge caution when out near water for recreational use. The impressive water year has completely removed all severe drought (D2) in northwest NV and northeast CA, with Lassen County remaining one of the only areas under moderate drought (D1).

The DWR plans to conduct one additional snow survey come the 1st of May at the Sierra central snow lab.
