In a significant step towards wildfire prevention, Sierra County’s Fire Safe Council has been awarded a $2.2 million grant from Calfire’s Fire Prevention Grant program. The funding will support the Sierra-Sattley Fuels Reduction Project, encompassing 400 acres of private lands to increase forest resiliency and safeguard communities.
The grant will enable the design, layout, and implementation of hazardous fuels reduction, thereby creating fuel breaks and clearing fuel loads along Highway 49, which serves as a crucial evacuation route for nearby residents. By reducing fuel risks, the project seeks to enhance the forest’s ability to withstand wildfires.
Participation in the project is entirely voluntary, and Fire Safe Sierra County will initiate outreach efforts once the grant agreement is signed, expected in late Winter 2023.
Residents and community members are encouraged to learn more about the project and its benefits by emailing Fire Safe Sierra County at [email protected] or calling 530.289.8025.
