Scammers are back at it. Swindling 50,000 dollars in a Bitcoin con.

Today, Lassen County Sheriff John McGarva emphasized that scammers are becoming highly sophisticated, making their schemes very convincing. The latest tactic involves callers falsely claiming to be a former sergeant with the Lassen County Sheriff’s Office, demanding payment to clear supposed warrants.

Just weeks ago, the sheriff warned the community not to fall for scams that claim you owe the SO money for an outstanding warrant. McGarva jokingly stated that the sheriff’s office likes to add a more personal touch to warrant service, typically meeting you in person.

Sheriff McGarva stressed that the department would never ask for a form of payment over the phone, requesting that you visit a kiosk to complete the payment, load gift cards to mail, or pay in Bitcoins.

If you are suspicious of a call, you are urged to contact the sheriff’s office. By visiting the Federal Trade Commission Consumer Advice website for resources, you can learn more about how to avoid and protect yourself from losing thousands to scammers.
