On May 19, 2025, at approximately 3:20 p.m., a serious collision occurred on State Route 44. Oconnor was driving east while Covello was traveling west. In an attempt to pass a truck, Covello entered the eastbound lane, directly into the path of Oconnor’s vehicle. The resulting head-on collision was unavoidable due to the speed and suddenness of Covello’s maneuver. Both drivers sustained major injuries; Oconnor was transported by ambulance to Banner before being transferred to Renown Medical Center, while Covello was airlifted to Shasta Regional Medical Center.
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) emphasizes the importance of safe passing practices and the necessity of wearing seat belts to prevent such tragic incidents.
