Seneca Healthcare District (SHD) has reached a significant milestone with the start of construction on its new hospital and nursing home. The project, set for completion by Spring 2027, aims to bring a modern healthcare facility with expanded services, advanced medical technology, and visitor-friendly areas to the Lake Almanor Basin community.
The existing hospital, which has been a part of SHD’s 70-year history, is being replaced to better meet the current and future healthcare needs of the region. The new facility will include an expanded emergency department with a designated trauma bay, increased surgical capacity, and enhanced diagnostic services. Inpatient rooms will also be upgraded to offer more privacy and better accommodations for families.
The construction faced delays when a protected Great Blue Heron nest was discovered on-site, leading to increased costs and adjustments to the project timeline. Despite these challenges, the project is moving forward after an approved bid, with an estimated cost of $83.7 million. Funding for the project comes from a combination of bonds, debt, cash reserves, and strong community support, which remains crucial as the construction progresses. SHD extends its gratitude to the community for its continued backing.
To mark the beginning of this significant endeavor, SHD invites the public to a “Coffee Kickstart” event at the new construction site on September 4th, from 9 to 11 a.m. Attendees will have the opportunity to see the start of the project, observe the mobilization of construction, and review the current plans. Coffee and treats will be provided.
Stay tuned for updates on the construction progress as this new facility begins to take shape.
