Rite Aid Corp. has confirmed the closure of its Quincy store, set for July 20, marking the end of its nearly 50-year presence in the area. This store was the only chain pharmacy in Plumas County and one of two pharmacies serving Quincy, impacting nine employees as it shuts down.

The closure follows a tumultuous period for Rite Aid, including its first Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing in 2023 aimed at financial restructuring amidst declining customer numbers and inventory problems. Additionally, the company faced legal challenges, including a complaint from the U.S. Department of Justice concerning its role in the opioid crisis, resulting in a $410 million settlement in 2024. A second bankruptcy filing occurred in May 2025 due to significant debts and liabilities.

Rite Aid CEO Matt Schroeder announced efforts for a strategic asset sale, expressing optimism about interest from potential buyers despite ongoing financial challenges. While some stores have been acquired, the Quincy location has not.

The Quincy Rite Aid has a storied history, opening in 1976 as part of the Plumas Pines Shopping Center, which faced opposition from local merchants concerned about competition. Over the years, the center evolved to include various businesses, with Rite Aid officially adopting its name in 1998 after acquiring Thrifty Payless.

The closure will also affect pharmacy services, with the last day of service scheduled for July 2. Quincy Pharmacy has offered to take on former Rite Aid customers, and there are additional pharmacy options in Chester and Portola. In response to the closure, Plumas County supervisors discussed enhancing parking access near Quincy Pharmacy to facilitate customer transitions.

Store manager Tanny Sloat, who has been with Rite Aid for 18 years, is among those affected by the closure. He has not disclosed future plans. Quincy Pharmacy can be contacted at 530-283-4545 or through its website.
