Fire officials near Westwood are emphasizing the importance of prescribed burns as California heads into another wildfire season.
On May 14th, Cal Fire’s Lassen-Modoc Unit conducted a controlled burn near Mooney Road outside Westwood. The operation also served as a live demonstration for state representatives and agency officials from across California.
Officials say prescribed fire remains one of the most effective tools for reducing hazardous vegetation, restoring forest health, and lowering the intensity of future wildfires.
Representatives attending the demonstration had the opportunity to observe how large-scale controlled burns are planned and managed safely as part of broader fuels reduction efforts. Fire leaders say collaboration between agencies, landowners, and local communities continues to play a critical role in long-term wildfire resilience across the state.
