This evening, the City of Portola will name its Mayor and Mayor Protem. The city council will discuss those nominated before making thier appointment during today’s regular council meeting. The community is welcome to City Hall to provide input.
Also of note on the agenda: The City will approve a letter to the county to support the Transportation Commission applying for a Caltrans planning grant to receive funding to create a county-wide Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Master Plan. Their support for the Transportation Commission’s application expresses that the plan will set an example to all rural CA counties to embrace clean transportation solutions and align with the state’s environmental goals.
A public hearing on increased trash service rates is also set for this evening. Intermountain Disposal is asking to raise rates by 2.51%. Rates just one year ago were substantially increased by 14.31%. Per the agreement between Intermountain and the City, they are entitled to an annual rate adjustment to account for the price change in the cost to run the business. If you wish to comment on the proposed increase, you can voice them during the public hearing. Thus far, the City has received one written protest.
The meeting will end with a discussion on approving a new code Enforcement position. Per staff reports, The City has historically maintained a Community Service / Code Enforcement Officer position but had to eliminate it for budget reasons.
In 2021, the City decided to contract these services to a third party. However, after a discussion with the interim city manager and finance officer, It was recommended that a 32-hour internal position should be established. This position, as proposed, will, however, emphasize community engagement rather than law enforcement but will still have “code enforcement” duties and authority. If approved by the council, a job description and job announcement will be created.
The council convenes this evening at 6 pm in the City Hall Council chambers on Third Ave. If unable to attend in person, a virtual option is available, accessed on the City’s website.
