The Plumas Unified School District is in a unique position as it prepares to select a new trustee for Indian Valley. With Dave Keller continuing his term by default, due to no other candidates initially filing to run, the district now has two interested candidates: Cindy Crim and Tommy Miles. Both bring distinct backgrounds and experiences to the table, aiming to address the challenges the district faces.
Cindy Crim has deep roots in Greenville, having lived there for 30 years and being actively involved in the community, particularly through her grandchildren’s school activities. Her background as a registered nurse has instilled in her a sense of teamwork and crisis management, skills she believes are transferrable to the board’s operations. Crim emphasizes her commitment to representing the voices of teachers, students, and community members, especially in light of the tragedies the area has faced, such as the town’s destruction by fire. Her focus is on financial stability, safety, and respect for employees within the district.
Tommy Miles, on the other hand, brings extensive educational experience to the role. With 38 years in various educational capacities, including administration and instructional design, Miles has a comprehensive understanding of the educational landscape. He highlights the district’s critical financial situation and sees the selection of a new superintendent as a pivotal opportunity for positive change. His approach centers on collaboration and strategic planning to restore public trust and navigate through fiscal challenges. Miles is particularly attentive to the specific needs of District 2, which was severely affected by the Dixie Fire, and aims to advocate for these areas while considering the broader needs of the district.
Both candidates will present their cases in an open session before the school board, which will then appoint one of them to serve as trustee until the next election in 2028. This appointment comes at a crucial time, as the district seeks leadership that can address financial woes and rebuild community trust. The decision will be made public at the March 12 meeting, which will also be available for viewing on YouTube Live.
