The Plumas Underburn Cooperative (PUC), in partnership with the Watershed Research and Training Center, is planning a broadcast burn on private properties in Valley Ranch. If weather and conditions allow, the burn will occur on Friday, Dec. 12, or Sunday, Dec. 14.
This burn follows a similar project conducted in October and is part of ongoing efforts by local citizens and wildland fire professionals to reduce wildfire hazards and promote forest health in the community. PUC emphasizes that prescribed fire smoke impacts are managed carefully by selecting favorable fuel and wind conditions to minimize effects on residents.
The burn is permitted by the Northern Sierra Air Quality Management District, and air quality updates can be accessed through the Fire and Smoke Map, AirNow.gov, and myairdistrict.com. Local fire and air quality agencies have been informed, so residents do not need to report the burn.
This project builds on extensive volunteer work by the Valley Ranch Firewise Community to reduce wildfire risks and enhance forest resilience. The Plumas Underburn Cooperative is a volunteer-based program under Plumas County Fire Safe Council and Feather River Resource Conservation District, dedicated to creating safer communities and healthier landscapes through prescribed fire.
