Plumas NF Updates Frenchman Lake Status Ahead of Memorial Day Weekend

After evaluating for safety and storm damage to make repairs, the Beckwourth Ranger District of the Plumas National Forest has announced that at least one of the boat ramps is open at Frenchman Lake. After a debacle at Lunker Point, where the gate was opened prematurely, and visitors caused an uproar that the dock was not suitable for use, the forest service apologized for the mix-up, sayings that after the very long winter and a welcomed warm weekend arrived, spring fever hit one of the employees who “missed that the boat dock [was] not where it [was] supposed to be and the gate needed to stay closed.”

Forest service staff adds that the campground remains blocked off. However, they are still planning for the campgrounds to be open by tomorrow. They promise to have more information coming soon regarding the status of recreation sites in time for Memorial Day weekend.

In light of several rescues around Frenchman Lake, the Plumas sheriff’s office says that when you visit the forests and recreational sites, be aware and follow road closure signs. Last weekend several vehicles got stuck in the mud and snow, having to be rescued by search and rescue. The Sheriff’s office says SAR members have been on a mission to save more folks from the snow and mud than they should this month and are feeling a little overwhelmed.

Be wise and turn around when you encounter any obstacle that may cause you to become stuck.
