The Plumas National Forest has updated its Stage II Fire Restrictions, making changes to the list of campgrounds where campfires are still permitted under limited exemptions.
According to forest officials, the updated Exhibit A revises exemptions on the Feather River Ranger District to clarify that campfires are allowed when a campground host is present at Cottage Creek Campground, which is located on the Plumas National Forest but administered by the Tahoe National Forest, and at Red Feather Campground.
At the same time, three campgrounds have been removed from the exemption list because of fire safety concerns.
Wyandotte Campground and Peninsula Tent Campground were removed following an increase in abandoned and escaped campfires. Forest officials say three escaped campfires at those locations have already sparked small wildfires this season.
Sly Creek Campground has also been removed from the exemption list after the campground host reduced their schedule to only a few weekends for the remainder of the season, raising concerns about the ability to safely monitor campfire use.
Stage II Fire Restrictions remain in effect across the Plumas National Forest as hot, dry conditions continue to elevate wildfire danger.
Forest officials are urging residents and visitors to do their part to prevent human-caused wildfires by following all fire restrictions and reporting any suspected wildfire immediately by calling 911.
