The Plumas National Forest will implement Stage II Fire Restrictions on Wednesday, August 5, as continued hot, dry weather increases wildfire danger across the region.
Under the restrictions, campfires are only permitted in designated recreation sites with a campground host and must be contained in established fire rings. Smoking is limited to enclosed vehicles or buildings, designated recreation sites, or areas cleared of all flammable material.
The use of vehicles, generators, and other internal combustion engines is restricted to designated roads and trails, while welding and other open-flame equipment are prohibited. Firewood cutting with chainsaws is still allowed, but operators must check the daily woodcutting status by calling 1-800-847-7766 before heading out.
Forest officials remind visitors that a California Campfire Permit does not exempt them from the restrictions, although approved portable stoves, lanterns, and similar devices may still be used when operated safely in cleared areas.
Officials say nearly all wildfires on the Plumas National Forest this year have been human-caused, including escaped burn piles and abandoned campfires. Anyone who sees a suspected wildfire is urged to call 911 immediately.
