Plumas National Forest has initiated a new forest closure order in response to ongoing safety concerns and the need for further work after the 2020 North Complex fire. The previous order, which expired recently, shuttered numerous recreation sites, including campgrounds and trailheads.
While several sites are set to reopen, the updated closure order, effective from now through July 1, 2025, maintains closures for five campgrounds, three trailheads, and one bridge. This includes Butte Bar, Feather Falls, Little North Fork, Rogers Cow Camp and Stag Point campgrounds; Feather Falls, Sky High and Stag Point trailheads; and Toland Creek Bridge.
Although an oversight initially excluded the Little North Fork Trailhead, it remains effectively closed due to adjacent campground closures.
Recreation staff and partners are working on recovery efforts, with significant progress being made, such as hazard tree removal and bridge replacement at Feather Falls. However, forest officials say challenges persist, and extensive work is still required. The Feather Falls Campground is undergoing reconstruction and aims to reopen by Spring 2025.
Feather River District Ranger Loren Everest acknowledges the frustration but emphasizes the commitment to restoring access to the recreation sites. Public notifications will announce any modifications to the closure order, which is enforced to ensure safety and facilitate repair efforts.
Violating the closure order carries penalties of up to $5,000 for individuals or $10,000 for organizations, underlining the seriousness of the safety measures.
