Plumas County Search and Rescue Responds to Multiple Hiker Emergencies

Busy Day for Plumas County Search and Rescue

This morning, Plumas County SAR was dispatched to assist an injured hiker on the Pacific Crest Trail near Deadman Springs, above the Middle Fork of the Feather River. The hiker was unable to walk out and required assistance.

Before our team could respond to that call, we were notified of a second injured hiker in the Lakes Basin area. Due to limited available personnel, SAR requested Graeagle Fire Department to respond to the Lakes Basin incident while our team focused on the PCT rescue.

SAR coordinated closely with CHP Air Operations—Valley Division, which launched multiple search flights. Initial attempts to locate the injured hiker were unsuccessful due to challenging terrain and limited contact. However, after obtaining more precise coordinates and confirming the hiker’s location well above the Middle Fork, we were able to direct the CHP helicopter to her position.

Thanks to great teamwork and communication, CHP successfully performed a hoist extraction and transported the hiker to Plumas District Hospital for treatment.

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to CHP Air Operations – Valley Division and Northern Division, and to the Graeagle Fire Department for their critical support today. Having such dedicated partners makes all the difference when lives, time, and safety are on the line.
