Plumas County Office of Emergency Services advises residents to prepare for the next round of storms from today through
Christmas. Power outages, rain, heavy wind and snow are what is anticipated.
To help residents prepare for potential flooding and storm impacts, sand and sandbags are currently available at multiple locations throughout the area. Residents may obtain sand and sandbags, at no cost, during daytime hours at the following locations:
- City of Portola, 120 Main St. in Portola; available for city and county residents
- Graeagle Fire Department, 7620 Highway 89 in Graeagle
- Peninsula Fire Department, 801 Golf Club Road in Lake Almanor
- Hamilton Branch Fire Department, 3791 Big Springs Road in Hamilton Branch
- Chester Fire Department/Chester Public Utility District, 251 Chester Airport Road in Chester
- Quincy Fire Department Station 1, 501 Lawrence St. in Quincy; sand is already bagged and available at rear of station under cover
- Indian Valley Fire Department; contact Indian Valley Community Services District at 530-284-7224 to request supplies
Supplies are available on a first-come, first-served basis while quantities last. Plumas OES requests that residents take only what they need or up to 10 per family. Residents need to bring their own shovels and be prepared to fill and transport sandbags themselves, if possible.
These materials are intended to help protect homes, businesses and property from potential water intrusion. Officials encourage residents to take proactive steps now and stay informed about changing weather conditions.
Some community members may not have the physical ability or resources to obtain sandbags. Those in need, or who have active flooding beyond their capability, are instructed to contact their local fire department or the Plumas County Sheriff’s Office at 530-283-6300. In an emergency call 911.
