Plumas Charter School announces that its charter renewal petition has been approved, extending the school’s authorization for an additional five years through 2031. The decision ensures continued operation of PCS’ innovative, personalized educational programs throughout Plumas County, said the school.

The renewal follows a rigorous process that PCS began last spring. On Nov. 12, 2025, PCS Executive Director Taletha Washburn and Indian Valley Academy Site Director Ryan Schramel presented the school’s charter renewal petition to Plumas Unified School District Administrator Richard DuVarney at a public meeting in Greenville. The presentation outlined PCS’ mission, core values, student achievement, enrollment trends, leadership and financial health as part of the state-mandated review.

Charter renewal is a comprehensive accountability process required under California law roughly every five years, said PCS. It allows the authorizing district to evaluate whether a charter school continues to meet state and local standards for academic performance, fiscal stability and operational integrity. Schools submit detailed data and evidence demonstrating how they serve students, manage resources and fulfill their charter commitments.

PCS was founded in 1998 and holds Charter No. 146, making it one of the earliest charter schools approved in California following the passage of the Charter Schools Act. The renewal approval underscores the school’s sustained success in delivering flexible, community-centered education for more than 25 years, said PCS.

“We undertook this renewal process with a commitment to transparency and a deep belief in our mission,” Washburn said. “To have our petition approved through 2031 is a testament to the dedication of our teachers, staff, families and community partners. We are grateful for the support we received and for Administrator DuVarney’s thoughtful leadership throughout this process.”

PCS reports that it worked with Parsec Education to organize and present its academic and operational data effectively. Parsec consultant Patrick Swisher supported the school in synthesizing multiple assessments and performance indicators into a compelling narrative that clearly demonstrated student growth and achievement.

The newly approved charter term runs through June 30, 2031, securing PCS’ ability to serve students with personalized learning pathways, hands-on projects and community-based educational opportunities, said the school.

“Each member of our team plays a vital role in helping students reach their potential,” Washburn said. “Without their commitment, we wouldn’t have the academic performance and community support that make renewal possible. I am forever grateful to our staff and families.”
