The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection Lassen-Modoc Unit has announced that starting at 8 a.m. on May 1, all hazard reduction burning in Lassen, Modoc, and Plumas counties will require a permit.
Burn permits can be obtained online at https://burnpermit.fire.ca.gov/. The application process includes watching a brief educational video and submitting a form, which provides essential information for conducting burns safely and reducing fire escape risks. Permits can be held as printed copies or digitally and are valid from May 1 each year, requiring annual renewal at no cost.
Property owners must check the burn day status through their local air pollution control district. In Plumas County, this is managed by the Northern Sierra Air Quality Management District. Burning is only permitted on designated burn days and within specified hours, which can be confirmed by calling the Cal Fire Lassen, Modoc, Plumas Air Pollution Control District at 530-251-4403.
Typically, Cal Fire burn permits are required for residents in state responsibility areas under Cal Fire’s jurisdiction. However, all residents in Lassen, Modoc, and Plumas counties can apply for a permit when required, in cooperation with local fire departments. Note that burning is prohibited within the city of Portola.
Permit guidelines must be strictly adhered to, including maintaining a minimum 10-foot clearance to bare mineral soil around burn piles, having a shovel and water source available, and an adult present during burning. Noncompliance could result in citations and fines.
