The grand total of stolen vehicles hit a high of 21 since June, according to the Susanville Police Department’s Detective Warner, who issued a statement today.
Just this morning, three vehicles were reported stolen yet were quickly recovered. Detective Warner says there has been an increase in vehicle theft over the last few weeks, much more than is typically seen in the city.
Warner says reports used to come in about one every week to one every month; now the department is seeing reports for stolen vehicles come in every other day and, like today, multiple in one 24-hour period.
The days of leaving your keys in your vehicle and feeling secure are long past; the department is urging the community to lock your cars and remove all valuable items when parked outside overnight, as the recent thefts are typically crimes of opportunity. Warner also suggests that you do not leave your vehicle unlocked or running while warming it up to head to work.
Warner adds that simple deterrents like locking your doors can help in reducing the amount of theft.
