Modoc National Forest invites you to Obsidian Day 2026 on August 22nd at the Rainbow Obsidian Mine in the North Warner Mountains. You can reach the mine via Forest Road 46N30, known as the “30 road.” This gravel road stays in good condition for all standard passenger vehicles.

Gem and Mineral Specialists from the Northern Nevada Gem and Mineral Society will lead educational talks and obsidian demonstrations. They volunteer their time to guide you through mining and basic refining techniques. You can join hands-on sessions to learn about minerals, rocks, and how people use them. The event aims to teach responsible gathering and resource management.

Obsidian Day runs from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. You must have a permit to attend. Get your permit on August 20th or 21st at the Modoc National Forest office, 225 W 8th St., Alturas, open 8 AM to 4 PM. A few permits may be available on event day.

The free-use permit allows you to collect obsidian for personal use only. Selling, trading, or bartering is not allowed under federal rules. Each permit lets you gather up to two 5-gallon buckets of obsidian per day.

Obsidian is sharp and can cause injury. Wear gloves, eye protection, and appropriate clothing. Keep pets at home to avoid harming their paws. Prepare for heat, smoke, or fire risks common in late summer. The event will provide drinking water.

Will you take part in learning how to safely gather obsidian and protect the environment? This event offers a unique chance to discover geology up close and practice sustainable collecting.
