The League of Women Voters of Plumas County invites high school students to enter the Nancy Lund Memorial Essay Contest.
Students in grades nine through 12 who live in Plumas County can participate. This includes those attending Plumas Unified School District, county charter schools, private schools, or those who are homeschooled.
Two winners will receive $500 each. One prize goes to a student in grades nine or 10, and the other goes to a student in grades 11 or 12.
This year’s essay topic asks students to pick a current issue that matters to them. Then, they must explain how they would discuss that issue respectfully with others. This challenge comes as many students prepare to vote for the first time.
The deadline for submitting essays is 5 p.m. on November 13. Essays should be no longer than 500 words.
Students can find contest rules and judging criteria through their schools or on the flyer from the league.
Ann Clark, chair of the league’s essay committee, said the topic highlights the challenge of discussing controversial issues respectfully today. Clark encourages young people to build those skills early.
