Downieville, CA – The Sierra County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a lost and stranded mountain biker who encountered snow while attempting to ride the Butcher Ranch Trail. After leaving the established trail due to winter conditions, the individual was unable to safely self-rescue.

The subject was equipped with satellite communication and was able to call for assistance. A California Highway Patrol (CHP) helicopter based out of the Auburn Airport responded, picking up a Helicopter Rescue Technician (HRT) member in Nevada City before proceeding to the incident area.

The CHP crew located the mountain biker and landed at the Downieville School field to reconfigure the aircraft for hoist operations. The subject was then successfully hoisted into the helicopter and transported back to Downieville.

The Sierra County Sheriff’s Office reminds the public that winter backcountry conditions can change rapidly. Anyone recreating in remote areas during winter months should be properly prepared, including appropriate clothing, emergency supplies, and reliable communication equipment.

The Sheriff’s Office thanks the CHP Air Operations unit and all personnel involved for their professionalism and assistance during this successful rescue.
