Obsidian Mines Remain Closed Until July 1; Free Collection Permits Available Starting Then
The Modoc National Forest has announced that its obsidian mines will remain closed for the current season until July 1, 2026. Beginning July 1, free permits for obsidian collection will be available at the Modoc National Forest Supervisor’s Office located in Alturas, California.
Collectors with a valid permit may begin gathering obsidian from July 1 through August 31, 2026. To ensure fair access, there will be a daily limit on the number of permits issued, and each individual may obtain up to three permits per season.
For additional details on the permit process and obsidian collection guidelines, visitors are encouraged to visit the U.S. Forest Service Modoc National Forest website at www.fs.usda.gov/r05/modoc/permits.
The Forest Service thanks the public for their patience and looks forward to welcoming visitors this summer.
