Modoc County Updates Creek Flow Measurements Amid Summer Changes

The Modoc County Watermaster Department has released updated creek flow measurements for key waterways in its service area. These reports provide insight into local water conditions and highlight the ongoing changes in creek flows as summer progresses.

As of last week, notable creek flows were recorded as follows:

  • Davis Creek: 6 cfs
  • New Pine Creek: 5.5 cfs
  • Pine Creek (Alturas): 12 cfs
  • Emerson Creek: 5.5 cfs
  • Soldier Creek: 4 cfs
  • Eagle Creek: 4 cfs
  • Cedar Creek (Surprise Valley): Dry
  • Mill Creek (Lake City): 3 cfs
  • Bidwell Creek: 4.5 cfs
  • Cottonwood Creek (Surprise Valley): 4 cfs
  • Rader Creek: Dry
  • North and South Deep Creeks: Dry

Observations

Between August 18 and August 22, most creeks experienced measurable declines in flow, with Pine Creek (Alturas) showing the most notable drop—from 12 cfs to 7 cfs in just four days. Smaller decreases were also observed in Soldier, Bidwell, and Cottonwood Creeks. Meanwhile, dry conditions persisted in Cedar, Rader, and the Deep Creeks, and Pine Creek in Surprise Valley also recorded no flow.

These reports demonstrate the sensitivity of Modoc County’s waterways to seasonal changes and the importance of ongoing monitoring for water users and land managers.
