Modoc County Residents Face Summer Power Outages Due to Wildfire Safety Measures

SHARE NOW

Modoc County residents should brace for power outages throughout the summer as Pacific Power implements wildfire safety settings aimed at preventing fires. According to city officials, these outages are part of the Enhanced Safety Settings program, which automatically shuts off electricity when power lines come into contact with tree branches, wildlife, or face high winds. While intended to reduce fire risks, these safety measures can lead to unexpected power outages, which may last longer than usual.

Unlike planned Public Safety Power Shutoffs, which provide advance notice, Enhanced Safety Settings are activated immediately by environmental conditions. During wildfire season, the company’s equipment is calibrated to respond more quickly, making it more sensitive to disturbances.

Power outages may persist longer because line crews must inspect the entire length of the power line before service can be restored. Pacific Power’s meteorologists and safety staff monitor fire conditions daily and adjust their response plans according to the risk level.

Residents in high fire risk areas, including parts of Modoc County, Lassen, and Siskiyou, might face multiple outages each week during the summer peak. Pacific Power recommends that customers update their contact information and sign up for alerts via phone, email, or text.

City Council members have been briefed on this issue and are actively working to inform the public. Residents are encouraged to prepare by keeping emergency kits ready, planning for food and medication needs, and making alternative arrangements for medical devices.

While these outages may be inconvenient, utility officials emphasize that they are crucial for protecting communities from wildfires. Residents are asked for their patience as crews conduct patrols and restore power safely after each outage event.
