Millions of vehicles currently traveling on U.S. roadways have unresolved safety recalls, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The California Highway Patrol is bringing awareness to drivers this week as they recognize Vehicle Safety Recalls Week, observed March 2 through March 8.
Federal safety officials say recalls can involve serious defects affecting critical components such as airbags, brakes, steering systems and other essential equipment. If not repaired, these issues may increase the risk of crashes or injuries.
Drivers are encouraged to check whether their vehicles have any open recalls. To do so, vehicle owners can locate their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) — typically found on the dashboard near the windshield or inside the driver’s side door — and enter it at NHTSA.gov/recalls.
If a vehicle is subject to a recall, repairs are completed free of charge at authorized dealerships.
Officials say taking a few minutes to check for recalls can help improve safety for drivers, passengers and others on the road.
