Local Heroes Honored for Service to Community and Country

Susanville’s first responders were celebrated for their exceptional service during this year’s Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) and American Legion annual awards ceremony. The event honored the dedication, bravery, and commitment of these local heroes who go above and beyond in their roles to protect and serve the community.

Firefighter of the Year: Zach Hoffman
Public Safety Chief Bengoa-Bollinger presented the 2024 VFW Firefighter of the Year award to the Susanville Fire Department’s Fire Apparatus Engineer Zach Hoffman. Hoffman joined the department in July 2023 and quickly rose through the ranks due to his exemplary skills and leadership. Promoted twice within a year, he currently serves as a Fire Apparatus Engineer, bringing over eight years of fire service experience to the role.
Hoffman’s dedication extends beyond firefighting—his training and teaching expertise have significantly enhanced the department’s ability to conduct in-house employee training. His peers and supervisors commend his ambition, dependability, and commitment to excellence. In addition to his fire service, Hoffman is a proud Army veteran, having served five years in the military with distinction, earning numerous medals and awards.

Peace Officers of the Year: Derek Kennemore and Albert Gonzales
Deputy Sheriff Derek Kennemore and Correctional Deputy Albert Gonzales were recognized as the 2024 Peace Officers of the Year. Their outstanding contributions to law enforcement and their unwavering dedication to public safety have earned them the respect and admiration of their colleagues and the community.

Thomas Tucker Officer of the Year: Officer Salas
Officer Salas received the prestigious Thomas Tucker American Legion Post 204 Officer of the Year award. Known for his exceptional service and commitment, Salas is praised for his dedication to keeping the community safe and for his consistent efforts to make a positive impact.

Susanville’s CHP Officer of the Year: Officer Lingenfelter
Officer Lingenfelter was recognized as Susanville’s Officer of the Year at the Veterans Officer of the Year ceremony, pictured with Sergeant Major during the event. Praised as an exceptional officer, Lingenfelter is described as a vital member of the team, embodying the values of service and dedication that define the city’s law enforcement efforts.

Probation Officer of the Year: Gracie Phillips
Rounding out the honors, Probation Officer Gracie Phillips was named the 2024 Officer of the Year. Selected by her peers for her hard work and dedication, Phillips excels in both the adult and juvenile divisions of probation. Her knowledge, compassion, and steadfast commitment to those she serves have made her an invaluable member of the department.

Community Recognition
For over six decades, the American Legion and VFW have hosted this ceremony to recognize the efforts of first responders who embody the spirit of service. The awards underscore the vital role these individuals play in maintaining the safety and well-being of the community.
