The Lassen County Office of Education (LCOE) recently brought learning to life with a fun and engaging Pop-Up Math Night at Big Valley School, offering students and families a fresh perspective on mathematics.
The interactive event was designed to show how math is not only essential but also exciting and
relevant to everyday life. Students and parents participated side-by-side in a variety of hands-on
activities that highlighted real-world applications of math concepts.
Activities included designing a recipe to explore measurement and proportions, experiencing
math through movement with dancing and rhythm-based drumming, and engaging in a variety of
math games that reinforced problem-solving skills. These activities helped demonstrate how
math is woven into daily routines, from cooking to music and beyond.
“Our goal was to make math approachable, engaging, and meaningful for both students and
families,” said James Hall, Director of Student, Family, and Community Engagement. “By
creating a fun and interactive environment, we hope to build confidence and show that math can
be enjoyable and accessible to everyone.”
The evening also provided families with strategies and tools they can use at home to support
math learning, strengthening the connection between school and home.
LCOE extends its appreciation to Big Valley School staff, students, and families for their
enthusiastic participation and support in making the event a success.
