It will be easier for you to get a wilderness permit in the Lassen Volcanic National Park starting in the new year. Paper permits will move exclusively to an online system starting January 17th.

The move to an online database will give park managers better data to preserve and protect the lands. Lassen Volcanic Superintendent Jim Richardson said it would also “make the process of getting a backcountry permit more convenient …Replacing the outdated paper-based permit system also improves safety and communication” about wildlife concerns, weather, and fire hazards.

You can get yours to backcountry backpack the park from recreation.gov once the process is launched. Fees include an administration fee of $6 per permit and a wilderness permit fee per trip of $5 for each person 16 years and older.
