The Lassen National Forest is planning to conduct prescribed fire operations beginning March 18, 2026 pending all required approvals and favorable conditions. Ignitions are estimated to take approximately three days, with mop up and patrol to continue after ignitions are complete. Prescribed fires are used to reduce overgrown vegetation to help protect communities, infrastructure and natural resources from wildfires.
Prescribed fires planned for the area include:
• The Eastside Under Burn Project: Approximately 1,050 acres
Location: Halls Flat and Bainbridge Reservoir, approximately 9 miles northeast of the
community of Old Station.
• Crossroads Under Burn Project: Approximately 250 acres
Location: North side of Lake Britton and east of Burney Falls State Park, approximately
11 miles north of the community of Burney.
• Multiple Pile Burns: Approximately 1200 acres
Location: Assorted across the Hat Creek Ranger District (project to continue through the spring, as conditions permit- pile locations will be announced as ignitions are planned.) Areas may close to the public for several days for public safety. Watch for warning signs along roads near all prescribed fire areas before and during burns. Residents may experience smoke during the prescribed burns. For more detailed information about air quality, go to AirNow online or download the app. When driving, slow down and turn on your headlights when you encounter smoke on roadways. Weather and fuel moisture conditions will be evaluated before and during ignitions. If conditions warrant, scheduled prescribed fire activities may be canceled. Stay informed about scheduled prescribed fires through the forest social media channels. We will notify county emergency management officials when ignitions begin.
