The West Lassen Headwaters Landscape Restoration Project has entered a 30-day scoping period from now until December 2, 2024, inviting you to share your feedback on a large-scale restoration plan affecting over 101,000 acres of Lassen National Forest lands. This project, driven by the urgency of post-fire recovery in areas impacted by the Dixie and Park Fires, aims to protect the resilience and health of local forests and watersheds, while directly enhancing safety for nearby communities.
For residents in areas like Mineral, Mill Creek, and Childs Meadows, this project focuses on crucial actions such as fuels reduction, tree thinning, and fire preparedness, creating a safer environment by reducing wildfire risk. Through the Western Firesheds Emergency Action Declaration, forest managers are expediting these measures to protect both your community and critical infrastructure from severe wildfires.
The project also emphasizes restoring fish habitats and watersheds, which helps keep waterways healthier and benefits local ecosystems. A combination of controlled burns, trails, and designated heliports are part of a proactive strategy for both wildfire prevention and rapid response. In areas of significant tree mortality, such as the patches exceeding 100 acres left by the fires, the project includes replanting and clearing dead trees to promote regrowth and stabilize the landscape.
