Lassen County voters will face decisions on two local measures in the upcoming November election: Measure V and Measure W.
Measure V proposes a 1% Transactions and Use Tax on qualifying transactions in the unincorporated areas of Lassen County, excluding the City of Susanville, where the current sales tax would remain unaffected. If approved, the funds would be dedicated to public safety services, including the Lassen County Sheriff, Fire, Office of Emergency Services, Probation, District Attorney, and Code Enforcement. The tax revenue would be used solely for expenses related to public safety, such as wages, training, equipment, and communications. Placed on the ballot by th eBoard of Supervisors, Measure V requires a two-thirds majority to pass. Lassen’s sales tax currently sits at the lowest in the state at 7.25%
Measure W, introduced by the Shaffer Elementary School District, seeks voter approval to issue up to $2 million in bonds to fund specific school facility projects. The funds would be allocated for improvements such as renovating classrooms, enhancing parking safety, and updating infrastructure, but would not be used for salaries or routine operating costs. To oversee spending, the district plans to establish an independent citizens’ oversight committee and conduct annual audits. Measure W requires at least 55% voter approval to pass.
Both measures include specific accountability provisions to ensure that funds are used as intended. Voters will have the opportunity to weigh these proposals and decide on the potential financial commitments. Ballots can begin to be mailed by the elections department the first week of october.
