Filing deadline extended for several Lassen County offices after incumbents don’t file
Several Lassen County races for the upcoming primary election have been reopened after incumbents failed to submit candidacy paperwork before the filing deadline.
The Lassen County Clerk-Recorder’s Office announced Saturday that the filing period has been extended until 5 p.m. Wednesday, March 11 for multiple county positions ahead of the June 2, 2026 statewide direct primary election.
Under California election law, when an incumbent does not file for reelection by the deadline, the filing period is extended for other potential candidates. During the extension period, the incumbent is no longer eligible to file, but new candidates may enter the race.
The extension applies to the following offices:
Lassen County Supervisor, District 3
Lassen County Assessor
Lassen County Auditor-Controller
Lassen County Clerk-Recorder
Lassen County Treasurer-Tax Collector
Anyone interested in running for one of those offices can file a Declaration of Candidacy at the clerk’s office in the county annex behind the historic courthouse at 220 S. Lassen St. in Susanville.
Most county offices require candidates to be U.S. citizens and registered voters in Lassen County, though some positions have additional qualifications.
For example, supervisor candidates must live in District 3, while the assessor position requires a valid appraiser’s certificate issued by the California State Board of Equalization or the ability to obtain a temporary certificate shortly after taking office. The auditor-controller and treasurer-tax collector positions require specific financial, accounting, or management qualifications.
Each position carries a four-year term beginning Jan. 4, 2027.
Filing fees vary by office, ranging from $398 for the District 3 supervisor seat to $1,475 for the auditor-controller and treasurer-tax collector positions. Candidates may also submit a Statement of Qualifications for the county voter guide for an additional fee.
Prospective candidates can get more information or begin the filing process by contacting the clerk’s office at 530-251-8217.
